How do I keep my FTP connection longer without it timing out so soon?

To keep your FTP connection open longer without it timing out so soon, we recommend that you adjust the Keep Alive setting on your FTP client:

In FileZilla:

1. Click on 'Edit' / 'Settings.'
2. Click the checkbox next to 'Enabe KeepAlive' Settings.
3. Change the 'Send KeepAlive commands' values from 15 and 25 seconds to 30 and 45 seconds for each of the two checkboxes.
4. Increase the 'Timeout Detection' from 60 seconds to 120 seconds.
5. Click on 'Firewall' in the left menu on the screen. Check the 'Passive Mode' checkbox.

For further Filezilla Support, browse to their documentation: http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/documentation/

In Microsoft FrontPage:

A common issue with Frontpage is the publishing to timeout when the website becomes too large. The more files you have, the longer it will take FrontPage to connect to your website. Here are some suggestions to address this:

1. Breakup your site into smaller subwebs so that it is more manageable and you are able to publish. You can create a subweb (or child webs) from within Frontpage: Tools, Server, Administration Home, Scroll to the bottom and select "Create a subweb ".

2. Optimize your website. Some suggestions are offered here (no affiliation to Netfirms): http://www.webdevelopersnotes.com/design/optimizing_web_pages.php3.

4. The Frontpage program needs to create multiple programming files ( vti ) to allow themes and other server extensions to function properly. These vit files are created during the publishing process.

However the extra timing it takes front page to create the programming can cause the server to easily time out. We recommend that you publish your site locally (eg .to your desktop or C: drive) and then publish those files to our servers using an ftp program. Once you have the files transferred to our servers, you can reconnect to your site live with front page and reapply any components.

To FTP your files to the remote server we recommend that you try using FileZilla which may be downloaded for free from the Netfirms Starter CD or via http://filezilla.sourceforge.net.For instructions on how to upload files using FileZilla, please visit http://www.netfirms.com/support and do a keyword search on FileZilla.

To connect live to your site with Frontpage:

a. From your frontpage program, click File -> Open Web
b. Enter: <http://membername.netfirms.com> (where <membername> is your Member Name assigned to your Netfirms Hosting account)
c. Enter your userid and password (This will connect you directly to your ftp account on our server)

4. Review further suggestions from the Microsoft website support section (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q154678/)

NetObjects:

1. Click the Publish Site icon in the menu bar to open the Publish Site window
2. In the Save Location area click the Pencil icon to open the Publish Settings window
3. In the Publish Settings, click the "Advanced" button
4. Select the AdvancedFTP tab.
5. Ensure the Port field is assigned with the value as: 21
6. The connect passive mode checkbox should be selected.
