As referenced from the WordPress site at (http://codex.wordpress.org/Glossary#Trackback), trackback helps you to notify another author that you wrote something related to what he had written on his blog, even if you don't have an explicit link to his article. This improves the chances of the other author noticing that you gave him credit for something, or that you improved upon something he wrote, or something similar.
NOTE: With pingback and trackback, blogs are interconnected.. However these feature is a major cause of spam. Trackpacks create automatic comments on
Wordpress blogs notifying the owner that someone on another website has
linked to the site. An email is generated for every trackback and 99%
of trackbacks are spam. As such we do not recommend the installation of these features on your WordPress as the site will be prone to high volumes of unsolicited mail resulting in deactivation of sendmail.
