How do I create custom nameservers?

The nameservers listed for your domain may be updated any time after your domain is fully registered. Your domain must be active in order to allow changes to the nameservers listing. If your domain is LOCKED, please unlock it first.

The registration of a new domain name typically takes between 24-72 hours.

To update the nameservers listed for your domain registered with Netfirms, please follow these steps:

1. Login to the Netfirms Members Control Panel at http:www.netfirms.com/members and enter the membername and password for your hosting account
2.Click
Domains
3. For the domain you wish to change nameservers, click Admin
4. Click DNS Admin
5. In the Name Servers section, update the nameserver listing accordingly

NOTE: When you enter the nameservers, the first one to answer is assumed to be the primary. Therefore the order in which the nameservers are listed does not matter and will not impact your domain's functionality.

Custom Name Servers

.com, .net or .org, .biz, .info
If you want to create or modify a nameserver which is based on your domain, click the Nameservers or DNS Settings option and then scroll to the bottom and follow the onscreen prompts to input custom nameservers for your own domain.

.ca
There is not a separate area where you are required to input your custom nameservers. Simply follow the above steps #1-5.The only requirement is that each name server must point to a unique IP address.

Custom Name Server Guidelines
In order to create custom name servers registered through Netfirms, you need to ensure of the following:

1. Standard practice is to host 2 nameservers so that one is assigned as primary and the other is secondary. This is to safeguard the hosting of any domains/websites/emails that require these nameservers for resolution.

2. Two separate physical servers are required. One for the primary nameserver, and one for the secondary.

3. A unique, dedicated IP address is required for each nameserver (you may be required to purchase a second dedicated IP from another provider as Netfirms accounts currently only support 1 dedicated IP).

4. Set up your nameservers accordingly. A DNS administrator should do this to ensure proper functionality of the nameserver.
