How do I change the nameservers listed for my domain name?

The nameservers listed for your domain may be updated any time after your domain is fully registered. Your domain must be active in order to allow changes to the nameservers listing. If your domain is LOCKED, please unlock it first.

.com, .net or .org, .biz, and .info
The registration of a new .com, .net or .org, .biz, and .info domain name typically takes between 24-72 hours.

.ca
The full registration of a new .ca domain name typically takes between 1-7 days as CIRA requires the registration of the .ca domain to be approved through their approval process. Please ensure that you reply to all CIRA emails (sent to the admin email contact you provided during the registration process) to allow registration of your .ca domain as quickly as possible.

To update the nameservers listed for your domain registered with Netfirms, please follow these steps:

1. Login to the Netfirms Members Control Panel at https://controlpanel.netfirms.com
2. Click
Domains
3. Click Domain Manager
4. For the domain you wish to change nameservers, click the plus sign to the left of the Domain Name
5. Click the DNS tab
6. In the DNS Servers tab, follow the onscreen prompts update the nameserver listing accordingly
.

NOTE: When you enter the nameservers, the first one to answer is assumed to be the primary.  Therefore the order in which the nameservers are listed does not matter and will not impact your domain's functionality.

Custom Name Servers

If you want to create or modify a nameserver which is based on your .com, .org, .info, or .net domain, choose the NS   tab instead of the DNS Servers tab from step #5 above. Then follow the onscreen prompts to input custom nameservers for your own domain. In order to create custom name servers for your domain name registered through Netfirms, you need to ensure of the following:

1. Standard practice is to host 2 nameservers so that one is assigned as primary and the other is secondary. This is to safeguard the hosting of any domains/websites/emails that require these nameservers for resolution.

2. Two separate physical servers are required. One for the primary nameserver, and one for the secondary.

3. A unique, dedicated IP address is required for each nameserver (you may be required to purchase a second dedicated IP from another provider as Netfirms accounts currently only support 1 dedicated IP).

4. Set up your nameservers accordingly. A DNS administrator should do this to ensure proper functionality of the nameserver.
