Getting Started With NetObjects 8

Netobjects v8 System Requirements:
  • Windows 98, ME, NT 4.0, 2000, or XP
  • 166 MHz or faster x86-based PC (Pentium/AMD)
  • 64 MB of RAM minimum; 128 MB RAM recommended
  • Before installation: 200 MB of available hard-disk space; after installation: 60 MB of available hard-disk space as virtual memory
  • 32-bit ODBC drivers for external database connectivity
  • TCP/IP compliance for Internet connectivity
  • Internet connection (56K minimum)
  • SVGA display capable of 800 x 600 pixels at 256 colors or more
  • CD-ROM drive
  • Mouse or compatible pointing device
  • Internet Explorer 6 or later installed on the machine
  • Verdana TrueType font (available with Internet Explorer 6)
I. Installing the Starter CD
  1. Insert the CD into your Windows computer's CD ROM drive
  2. The installation program will automatically display on your screen. Follow the onscreen prompts.

I. Downloading the NetOjbects Software

The NetObjects software may be downloaded once you have ordered a copy of the CD.

  1. Login to the Netfirms Members Control Panel at https://controlpanel.netfirms.com
  2. Click Marketing
  3. Click Starter CD
  4. Follow the onscreen prompts to download the software to your computer (we suggest you download the software to your desktop so you can find it easily after the download)
  5. Once the download has completed, double-click the downloaded file to install it
  6. Follow the onscreen prompts to install the software

II. Start Building Your Website with NetObjects

  1. Start NetObjects from the NetObjects icon
  2. Click File
  3. Click New Site
  4. Click Using Site Wizard
  5. Click Next
  6. Choose a Site Version: If your website will be marketing a business, an online service, or selling a product, we suggest that you choose Small Business as in the example below:
Business Site:
(a) Choose a style that you like and click Next. For this tutorial we have chosen "Celio - Purple - Keyboard"
(b) Step 2 is divided into two halves. Pages and Layout. NetObjects has selected its suggested pages. You may check other page names or un-check some of the suggested pages.
(c) On the Layout side of the screen, select the layout you want to use for your pages. For this tutorial we have selected Layout I.
(d) Click Next.

: NetObjects will prompt you as to whether you wish to create a profile that will save information so that it can be remembered by NetObjects in future. This is an optional step. For this tutorial, we have opted not to do so.

(e) Enter your Business' contact information
(f) Click Finish.
(g) You will be prompted to save the site. A name will have been given to your site, based on your business name. You may keep this or change this.
(h) Click Save
(i) You will be presented with a "tree-style" map of your new website. The structure will contain the page names that you chose in step #2 above. Double-click on a page name. We suggest that you start by
double-clicking on Home.
(j) To start populating the page with content, replace any existing content from within the Layout section with your own content.
(k) We recommend that for each page that you work on, you save your modifications immediately. To save modifications to your site, click File, Save Site
(l) Repeat step (i), (j), and (k) by clicking Site


NOTE: If you decide you want to change your site style, click Style and select style that you wish to use.

Family and Community Site:
(a) Choose a style that you like and click Next. For this tutorial we have chosen "Consum - Green - Family"
(b) Step 2 is divided into two halves. Pages and Layout. NetObjects has selected its suggested pages. You may check other page names or uncheck some of the suggested pages.
(c) On the Layout side of the screen, select the layout you want to use for your pages. For this tutorial we have selected Layout II.
(d) Click Next.

Note: NetObjects will prompt you as to whether you wish to create a profile that will save information so that it can be remembered by NetObjects in future. This is an optional step. For this tutorial, we
have opted not to do so.
(e) Enter your information.
(f) Click Finish.
(g) You will be prompted to save the site. A name will have been given to your site, based on your business name. You may keep this or change this.
(h)Click Save.
(i) You will be presented with a "tree-style" map of your new website. The structure will contain the page names that you chose in step #2 above. Double-click on a page name. We suggest that you start by
double-clicking on Home.

III. Publishing Your Website:
Once you have built your website with NetObjects and populated the pages with your own content you will need to publish it to your Netfirms account to make it accessible on the Internet:
  1. Click the Publish Site icon in the menu bar to open the Publish Site window
  2. In the Save Location area click the Pencil icon to open the Publish Settings window.
  3. In the Publish Settings click the New button.
  4. From the Server Type dropdown list select FTP.
  5. Enter “Netfirms” in the Profile Name field
    Enter your FTP address in the Server field.
    Enter “www” (without the quotes) in the Directory field.
    Enter your Username and Password.
  6. Check the Save as Global Profile option. This will save your new profile.
  7. Click the Close button
  8. In the Publish Site window select the user profile (Global Netfirms) from the pull down menu.
  9. In the Publish Site window, select the Publish Changed Assets Only option and Pages to Publish should be set to Entire Site.
  10. Click the Publish button

Once you have completed the steps above, visit your new website by browsing to your domain name (eg. http://www.yourdomain.com where yourdomain.com is your registered domain hosted by Netfirms).
